Much Ado About Nothing

Introduction (from Wikipedia): “Much Ado About Nothing is a 1993 romantic comedy film based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name. Kenneth Branagh, who adapted the play for the screen and directed it, also stars in the film, which features Emma Thompson, Robert Sean Leonard, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Kate Beckinsale in her film debut.”

Perfect for Valentine’s Day, this movie is Shakespeare for those who don’t like Shakespeare because they think the language is too difficult to understand. Branagh’s wonderful adaptation communicates as much through non-verbal cues as with the Bard’s prose, making it easy for all to follow the action.

The witty banter between Kenneth Branagh as Benedick and Emma Thompson as Beatrice (a couple who were married at the time of the filming) is the best part of the movie. Both start out by swearing they will never fall for the other, or indeed any member of the opposite sex. For example, Benedick to Beatrice, “truly, I love none,” and Beatrice to Benedick “a dear happiness to women.” Benedick to Beatrice: “I would my horse had the speed of your tongue.” By the end, of course, they have fallen for each other.

With a 90% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was and is critically acclaimed. Says New York Magazine: “one of the few movies of recent years that could leave its audiences weeping with joy.” Contributing to the joy are the Tuscan cinematography and the musical score by Patrick Doyle. Says one critic, “it feels like an infectious, non-stop party.” Variety says “Continuously enjoyable from its action-filled opening to the dazzling final shot.”

Why I recommend this movie. Please do not let the fact that it is Shakespeare dissuade you! It is a pure delight. It will leave you uplifted and thankful for romantic love. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day?
